GUIDELINES FOR ROOM PARENTS

It is your responsibility to:

1)    Organize an email/telephone tree to dispense classroom information. Have your teacher look at it and confirm all info is correct. Distribute in class and print out a completed roster and put in the PFRD box in the office. It is imperative that email addresses are included, if available.

    a)    Send out a first draft to all parents. This is when you will get the additional info you've been waiting for.

2)    The first month of school will be the hardest for this position. After you have your class roster call/email the parents. Please utilize them to help with the following:

    a)    Class Parties

    b)    Work on Teacher's Wish List

    c)    Handle Classroom Funds

    d)    Help coordinate Classroom Volunteers for the class and for the School Wide Events

    e)    Fall Festival volunteers for grade level carnival booths

    f)      Coordinate volunteers for grade level pizza sales

Another way to split up duties is:

    1)    Liaison for PFRD fundraisers

    2)    Party/field trip planner

    3)    Needs of the teacher, including volunteers in the classroom and classroom supplies.

(There are no rules for how you delegate, this sheet is just to give suggestions)

Once the volunteers have been assigned, please put the information on the classroom roster and give a copy to the PFRD. This way the person who signs up to coordinate an event will be notified directly by that committee. It is our hope that there will be no less than three lead parents in the lower grades and two lead parents in the upper grades. A lead parent is someone who takes on the responsibilities alongside the main room parent.

3)    You are the Primary liaison between the teacher and parents. Your job is to offer support and assistance to the teacher. Your amount of involvement will differ as to your particular teacher and grade level. For example, kindergarten teachers may require more help in the classroom on a daily basis, while 5th grade teachers may only need assistance with a major trip or class party.

Thank you again for you time and energy in making it a great year for our children.

Classroom Funds

Along with your teacher, you will need to create a classroom "Wish List". It is recommended (and probably the easiest) to create a money fund for the class. A designated person will be in charge. This would cover parties, supplies, etc. that your class will need. Choose the system that works best for you.

Class Parties

The District approves 3 parties a year— Winter Break, Spring Break and Year-End Party.  Any other celebrations need to be minimal and curriculum-related, and are up to the discretion of the teacher.

While Riverside Drive is a public school, there always arises equity issues among the classrooms. Some seem to have more parents who are willing to contribute to class parties, teacher's gifts or to arrange special events. The teacher and head room parent should always utilize and seek out parent volunteers who can add enriching cultural experiences to the classroom (free of charge) at no cost to the parents.

Teacher gifts are strictly voluntary. Donations can be made to the library in honor of someone special. Elaborate extravagant parties are not acceptable and remain the responsibility of the teacher and the administration.

Volunteers at Riverside Drive

It is impossible to pick up any newspaper or magazine and NOT find an article about how important it is to volunteer at your school.  Please keep these in mind:

  • Help with organizing Spirit days
  • Getting at least one parent from each grade level to attend the PTA meeting and then report back to room parents afterward
  • Helping with the Book Sale
  • Helping with Variety Show
  • Organizing and helping to execute a couple of after school dances for the Kids
  • Helping, when possible with all fundraisers and school organized events

None of the parents are paid for their volunteer hours. That includes those men/women who have taken on the large parent leadership roles in PTA/PFRD. Every child in the school benefits. Remember this if you receive resistance from a parent. We have many different ways parents can volunteer and still have it work with their daily schedule.

Room Parent should help teacher with:
(this is all in classroom)

1.Help with organizing, distribution and collecting money for the

Entertainment Book Fundraiser (1st week in Sept through the 4th week)

2.Help with organizing, distribution and collecting money for the Sally

Foster Gift Wrap Fundraiser  (3rd week of Sept - October)

3. Thanksgiving Food Drive-We are one of the largest collection locations for the food pantry in our area!!

4.Supporting, Organizing and Executing the Reflections Art Program (November-December)

5 January/February Masterpiece Cookie Dough/collect envelopes.

6. Yearbook- take pictures or ask parents to take pictures. Also, someone will need to create the yearbook page at the end of the year. This is very simple and well explained by the yearbook staff.

7.  Classroom art project and classroom auction basket.

8. Teachers notes (from students and parents) to the teachers for Teacher Appreciation Day.

Pizza Sales

Every grade level will have one or two months of selling pizza/ice cream. The proceeds will go towards the grade that sells. Usually we sell on Mondays and Fridays following school dismissal.
