Riverside Drive joins numerous elementary, middle and senior high schools in LAUSD in implementing the School For Advanced Studies (S.A.S.) program, providing gifted and high-ability students with a setting where grade level curriculum is taught with the greater depth and complexity that these students require.
Gifted/highly gifted students are to be clustered in classes. The original intent of this program is to mirror as much as possible the setup of a gifted magnet program.
PROGRAM GOAL:
The School For Advanced Studies (S.A.S.) program was developed to meet the increasing demand for high level academic programs which meet the educational needs of highly able learners. The overall program goal is to provide a program with high quality content and performance standards within a classroom setting.
CRITERIA OF ADMISSION:
Participation in the School For Advanced Studies (S.A.S.) program is voluntary and subject to one of the following criteria (either 1 or 2):
1) Students formally identified as Gifted by LAUSD.
2) Students in grade three or above who are not formally identified as Gifted but who demonstrate superior academic achievement may also participate in the S.A.S. program as high achievers.

Who makes decisions about the S.A.S. program regarding students, teachers and curriculum?
All program decisions are made by the S.A.S. COMMITTEE.
What grade levels are affected?
Grades 3, 4, and 5 will have S.A.S. classes.
What happens if my child is in the S.A.S. class, and is not comfortable there?
You may remove your child from the program at any time. Once removed, your child will remain out of the S.A.S. class for the remainder of the school year.
THE S.A.S. PROGRAM IS IMPLEMENTED UNDER THE AUTHORITY OF THE LOS ANGELES UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT.
