The Riverside Special Education Program

At Riverside Drive Elementary School, we are privileged to have a wonderful special education department, all with experienced, wonderful administrators and teachers.

APEIS - Richard Guillen
He was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. He attended UCLA where he received a BA in history. He then followed up with obtaining MS in educational administration from National University. He previously taught grades 1-4 in the general ed. classroom. He then began his administration career as AP at Lankershim Elementary where he stayed for two and a half years. Mr. Guillen has been APEIS at Riverside Drive Elementary School since 2006.

Resource Specialist - Louise Serlin-Poss
She has taught with LAUSD for over 22 years, teaching both middle school and elementary special day classes. She grew up in New York, where she received her Bachelor of Science in special education from Southern Connecticut State University. She then relocated to Los Angeles and received her general ed. credential, and later her resource specialist credential. She has been at Riverside Drive Elementary since 1994 and works with students with special needs who are in the general education setting, and assesses students who may qualify for special ed. services.

Upper ED - Jill Otero.
Jill began her teaching career at Leichman high School, a Special Education Center, in 1975. Since then, she has remained a special educator. She joined the Riverside Drive Elementary School faculty in 1992, and has beeen teaching the Upper ED class ever since. Jill loves being a special education teacher because she feels working with
children with special needs is challanging as well as rewarding.

Primary SLD/APH - Lisa Rosenstein
She has been teaching special education for fourteen years. She graduated from Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York with a Bachelor of Science in Speech Pathology and Audiology. From there, she worked as a speech therapist in a private special ed. school in Brooklyn, New York while obtaining her dual masters degree in Special Ed., and Elementary Ed. After obtaining her dual masters, she moved out to Los Angeles where she has worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District ever since. She has taught a Primary Aphasia class for the last 12 years, and since being at Riverside Drive she has combined the Aphasia with SLD, where it is now a combination class for children with specific learning disabilities and/or language disorders.

Upper SLD - Jennifer Gerdes.
She has been teaching for fourteen years both in the general ed. and special ed. settings. She attended UCLA for undergraduate and graduate school where she earned a credential in elementary ed. and a masters degree in general education. She had taught in the general ed. classroom for five years before becoming a special education teacher for students with SLD and ED eligibility's. To date, she has been teaching a special ed. class at Riverside Drive for the last nine years.

Primary Autism - Kate Botts
She has been teaching a special ed. class for three years, and prior to that, she worked as a teaching assistant in a special ed. classroom. Born in Europe, she came to the United States when she was sixteen. She graduated from CSULA with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology. She currently holds a preliminary credential in Special Education.

Upper Autism - Martin Kirschen.
He has been teaching children with autism for three years, both in the primary and upper classes. He received his California teaching credential five years ago. During that time, he worked with children with various disabilities, ranging in severity, from mild to severe.
