Help to Make Riverside
Even Better!

If you have the time to pitch in, there are many ways you can help out at Riverside....

WONDER OF READING

Reading Partners Wanted For Riverside Students!

With help from The Wonder of Reading, a not-for-profit organization, Riverside's brand new library is here. Now that the library and all of its new books are available to the children, The Wonder of Reading will train parent volunteers to read one-on-one with students.

As Riverside community members, you are an important part of this great news. But it's not enough to have a new library; we have struggling readers who need guidance and friendship from someone like you!

An extensive three hour training will be provided at Riverside to teach volunteers special reading techniques, such as oral reading strategies, reciprocal questioning, and retelling. After the training, you'll be matched with one student, and you'll work together for the school year. Volunteers work with their students one hour every week during school hours.

Can you think of an easier way to make a huge difference in a child's education in just one hour a week?

ROOM PARENTS:

You can help your school and your child's classroom by being a Room Parent or by just volunteering. We need at least 2 Room Parents per room, and preferably 3. In order to streamline the position, we have broken out Room Parent responsibilities as follows:

       1. PTA/PFRD Liason. Works closely with classroom teacher and grade level room parent to coordinate class needs.

       2. Fund Raising. Includes classroom projects and coordinating school-wide fund-raisers for the class.

       3. Parties and Field Trips.

To volunteer, please send your contact information and child's name and classroom to comments@riversidedrivepta.org

REFLECTIONS:

Reflections is a nationwide arts contest sponsored by the National PTA. Every year there is a different theme for the competition; the theme for 2007-2008 is "I can make a difference by". Students decide what category (music, visual arts, literature, photography) they would like to create a project in, based on the year's theme. The artworks are judged by local experts in each field. The Reflections Committee will deliver Reflections packets to the classrooms and pick up all Reflections artwork from the classrooms at the time of the deadline. Also, the Reflections Chair and their committee will help supervise the Reflections Art Show and assist in returning artwork to students. The Reflections Award Ceremony usually takes place in January. If you are interested in working on this committee or for further information, contact us at comments@riversidedrivepta.org

SPONSORSHIP (PTA FUNDRAISER):

We are looking for people to help find corporate sponsors, either through their place of work, or from our neighborhood businesses. We are looking for donations of funds, merchandise and services. If your company has a "Matching Funds" program, please let us know. Our enrichment programs are dependent upon people and companies supporting our school. Funds raised will go towards our Wonder of Reading library and new playground, just to name a few. WE NEED SOMEONE TO SPEARHEAD THIS COMMITTEE. For further information, contact volunteer@riversidedrivepta.org

LIBRARY BOOKS (PTA FUNDRAISER):

We sell library bound books for a small profit @ each P.T.A. fundraiser. Each book you purchase is pre-approved by LAUSD for inclusion in our Wonder of Reading library, and will have a dedication sticker placed inside with your family and child's name. Help stock the shelves of our library. Contact Ellen in the Library for more info.

THREE FOR ME

logo-34meThree for Me is a promise from a parent to a child, and from a parent to a school. It's a parent's promise to volunteer just three hours for our school during each school year on behalf of your child.

The National PTA wants to help increase parent involvement at public schools nationally. We are going to implement this program here at Riverside - and it will be easy for you, we promise! Everyone who promises to volunteer three hours on behalf of their child's education will find it to be a very valuable investment.

Some sample ideas: working on a food drive for the local community, planning and planting new greenery in the front of the school, helping to develop a watercolor painting program in the literacy grade, game playing once a month as alternative recess and lunch time fun programs, creating a family game and picnic day, phone help, bake sale help... the list can go on and on...

Forms will come home in your child's backpack soon to start the program. So gear up and start thinking of your three hours and how you would like to contribute - all ideas are welcome!
